impressions after lost horizon, by james hilton.
the valley of the blue moon, a verdant and slightly concave sprawling hollow at the foot of the largest snow-capped rock i ever laid eyes on, is not home to me, nor ever shall it be.
had i entered paradise under my own steam -- not kidnapped -- i daresay my impressions of utopia would be immeasurably more favorable.. for a certainty, i long for the hustle, the bustle, the din of my dirty and lusty city by the bay, whose roots sink deep into the ancient mire of human folly and wanton avarice.
. . . the only society that works is the one that allows us the pursuit of happiness not the finding of someones manufactured dream of a peaceful world. -- Nancy Drew
Thanks, Nancy! I just now saw this. I don't want a "manufactured dream" either.
See you in paradise!

lonely afternoon : memoir.
lonely afternoon.
i found it!.
Thanks, Terry, for sharing this recaptured memory. I always liked Astrud.
Similarly, on a subway train to or from a meeting in 1970 (Brooklyn), I caught the conclusion of a song, the incredible voice and lyrics accompanied by a symphonic surge of a never-before-heard tune. The following Saturday, after requisite time at the factory, 117 Adams Street, I turned on the radio and waited . . . and waited . . . and waited. . . .
At about 8:00 or so that night, I heard that glorious piece in its entirety:
The Bridge Over Troubled Water
You've given me hope for the eventual retrieval of the title that I cannot connect to this or that scene from a film or book.
THANKS.

i remember hearing parents say they're going out to eat for their child's birthday some years ago, and recently i see a lot of active jws wishing each other as well as worldly people on facebook a happy birthday, including emoticons related to partying.
is this a judicial offence, or have you seen anything similar?.
I hear they can get liberal over there . . .

Yes, nbd! I am "there" and just wrote about that very point.

I appreciate your thoughts. That poor man, who simply could not adjust to the wonders and beauties of the fabled paradise. He thought there was evil afoot . . .
Best.

On my FB accounts, there are many JWs and ex-JWs.
The actives may acknowledge the date of birth by writing, 'We're so happy little Suzy has come into our life.' Never, however, have my JWs written the worldly expression. I, a fader, tell little FB friend, Suzy, that I am happy she's a part of my life. She "likes" my comment.
The exes will say "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" Of course they will. Actives and exes are friends on FB.
Strangely, active Witnesses have every sort of theme party, based largely on popular movies, fantasy characters, etc.
My, my -- getting far too close to the edge . . .

For a certainty, I long for the hustle, the bustle, the din of my dirty and lusty city by the bay, whose roots sink deep into the ancient mire of human folly and wanton avarice. What some men consider the deplorable state of fallen man and his consequent foray into all things bad is what titillates and nourishes my aching soul. I suck life in through every pore of my unhallowed flesh, fed in such a manner that would unhinge the pure of heart.
I have neither desire nor need for a perfect state of affairs and a seeming comfort that coddle the body but eat the soul.
i think the reason the borg really went on a cost cutting move and is selling off all thier buildings has become obvious.
the cult is telling people that there fast growing but then the numbers seem to indicate about a 1% growth rate.
this would give them roughly 800,000 new baptized ones in ten years give or take do to the small increase per year from previous gains.

this site is such a great and valuable resource and simon is to be commended for running it for so long.
when i first came i was in such a bad state and really needed support and friendship.
so many posters commented on my threads and showed genuine care some are real life friends, some are facebook friends, some i talk to on the phone and some are forum friends.. i have just realised though that everyone online is not your friend.
Hi Kate:
I read every post on this thread and have nothing to add (because I couldn't). I've been here ten years and have learned so much, most importantly that we are so small and insignificant but can be kind and give the benefit of the doubt. Not saying we don't matter; we all do.
I deal with confusion and frustration and all the rest by writing prose poetry. By now, it's certainly clear to me that not everyone relates. Or maybe they do but have no response. This one got no attention when posted a few weeks ago, but maybe you'll relate to it. I wish you peace and love.
Your new friend,
CoCo
